The Secretary General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres invited the Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar to New York for a meeting, writes the Turkish Cypriot newspaper “Kipris”.
According to the Press and Information Office, the “Cyprus” report states that the United Nations has intensified its efforts to determine whether there is common ground for the resumption of negotiations.
The newspaper's information states that the Guterres-Tatar meeting will take place on April 5 at the international organization's offices in New York, and Mr. Tatar will be accompanied by his special representative, Gunes Onar.
The newspaper recalls that the Secretary General had met with President Nikos Christodoulidis in Brussels on March 21, on the sidelines of the European Union Summit, and adds that the meeting with Mr. Tatar is part of the framework of reciprocity, in a trying to maintain an equal approach to both sides.
The publication notes that the meeting will take place as part of an investigation by the UN into whether there is common ground. It is added that Ersin Tatar will convey to the Secretary General that “the inherent sovereign right of the Turkish Cypriot side could not be discussed at the negotiating table”.
The newspaper also notes that the Mr. Tatar will also mention that “the acceptance of the sovereign equality and equal international status of the Turkish Cypriots is absolutely necessary to enable the resumption of negotiations and insists that this be recorded”.
It is expected that Mr. Tatar will says that “it is no longer possible for one of the two sides sitting at the table to be accepted as a state and the other as a community and that it cannot accept the model of the federation, which is based on one sovereignty”.
It is also reported that Mr Tatar will again brief the UN Secretary General on the “reality that the Turkish Cypriots are being isolated and embargoed” as he claims, while calling on him “to propose a policy based on the realities in Cyprus”.
According to the Turkish Cypriot newspaper, it is expected that at the meeting Mr. Tatar will make the claim that during her contacts, the personal envoy of the UN Secretary General, Maria Ángela Holguín Cuéllar, must have found that there is no common ground between the sides and will demand that an accurate report be submitted to the UN Security Council on the “realities” in Cyprus.
