Sadness in the field of culture – The art historian Eleni Nikita has passed away

<p data-block-key=Grief spread in the field of culture and beyond, the news of the death of the art historian, Eleni Nikita, at the age of 76.

In his post, the former Deputy Minister of Culture, Yiannis Toumazis, said “Have a good trip to the light, my Helen. You left so much behind you, so precious for the art of Cyprus. Your legacy is great and your words are very poor. Thank you”.

Eleni Nikita was born in Nicosia. Studied social sciences (University of Geneva). He was a PhD in Art History. She worked at the Center for Social Research and the Cultural Services of the Ministry of Education and Culture (1977-2009), of which she was director from 2003 to 2009.

She was there for many years representative of the Ministry of Education and Culture in the Committee on Culture of the Council of Europe and in various committees of the European Union. He was also the Secretary General of the Cyprus National Commission for UNESCO from 2001 to 2009.

He was the author of several books. Her book “Christophoros Savva, the beginning of a new era in Cypriot art” he was awarded the 2009 State Prize for Literature in the essay-research category.

He was honored by the French government with the Knight of the Order of the Academic Phoenix and by the Austrian government with the Cross of Honor for Arts and Sciences.

He was a member of the International Association of Art Critics (AICA) and the Historical Art Society of Greece. Since 2012 she has been collaborating with the Leventios Gallery as curator of the Cyprus collection of the LA Leventis Foundation.
