After AKEL, other parties are preparing legislative proposals to put a brake on the increases in the increased charges announced by two banks. It is not ruled out that parties will work together to submit to the Plenary Session of the Parliament a unified bill, which will address the reactions to the increased bank charges. Hellenic Bank has already applied the new charges from January 3, 2022, while Bank of Cyprus will apply them from February 15.
DIPA, depending on the developments that will occur in today's session of the Parliamentary Committee on Trade, which will re-discuss the increased charges at the bank fees and the effects caused to consumers, will instruct Parliament's services to prepare a bill .
Specifically, with the DIPA law proposal, the scope of application of the decree of the Minister of Finance will be expanded, so that in addition to natural persons, the very small enterprises are also included. At the same time, the draft law will expand the list of banking transactions with ceiling charges and the types of bank accounts included in the decree of the minister.
DIPA MP Alekos Tryfonidis spoke yesterday about unjustified, provocative and unacceptable charges. “The impunity of the banks continues to the detriment of the consumers, who are in fact unprotected by the competent institutions, since both the Governor of the Central Bank and the Minister of Finance stated last week that they can not intervene because the increases do not concern accounts. “Payments with basic characteristics included in the decree issued by the Minister of Finance, but concern other bank accounts, such as current accounts, which are maintained by the vast majority of our fellow citizens,” he concluded.
