The Limassol Carnival is back in full swing – an 11-day extravaganza

The Limassol Carnival is coming back energetically, excitingly, to offer joy, entertainment and optimism, doing what it has been doing for over a hundred years, the Mayor of Limassol, Nikos Nicolaidis, said on Friday evening, presenting the program of this year's events and the "King of Flames of the Limassol Carnival", embodied by Dimitris Giannakou.

The pandemic deprived us of this unique feeling, the Mayor of the city said during the press conference, inviting all of Cyprus to the 11-day revelry of Limassol, which begins on Good Friday, February 16, and ends on Sunday, 26 of the same month.

"The municipal council has been trying in recent years, with the help of all carnival friends, on the one hand to modernize and renew the Limassol Carnival and on the other hand to revive its traditional elements", he added.

We will have, he continued, a unique program, while the great carnival parade is "expected to be the most spectacular parade ever, with thousands of visitors coming to our city".

Introducing the 16th King of the Limassol Carnival, the "King of the Flame", the Mayor of Limassol said that Dimitris Giannakou is the youngest person to take on this role, having participated in the Carnival since the age of three. “Above all, he was one of the most stable volunteers and collaborators of the Municipality of Limassol in the Carnival,” he added.

Taking the floor, the new King of the Carnival, Dimitris Giannakou, thanked the Municipality of Limassol for the honor to choose him. “They once asked me if I could imagine myself not being a carnival and I answered them that my mother has no other photo in the living room than the one of me, at the age of three, preparing my carnival costume,” he said. Finally, he wished everyone a happy Carnival.

The program of this year's Carnival was presented by the cultural officer of the Municipality, Skevi Antoniadou, who said that new elements are included in the rich program of events, starting with Tsiknopepti and the entry of the King into the city.

The parade, led by the Flame King of the Limassol Carnival, will start from Grigoris Auxentiou Square (in front of the Governor's Office), wander through the streets of the old town and end back at the square  in Grigoris Auxentiou Square, where a frenzy of song and dance will begin.

In addition, carnival-goers will have the opportunity to enjoy this year, in addition to the musical selections of the dj’s, live music from various bands, at every outdoor dance, while a series of events will be hosted for one more year in the indoor spaces of Harupomylos Lanitis. In one of the events, the well-known singer Paschalis will be hosted, in a party full of hits from the era of the ’60s until today.

On Saturday, February 25, carnival-goers will have the opportunity to enjoy melodies from Teams of Cantadores, who this year will end up after a tour at the Pattiche Municipal Theater.

The rich program is completed by the Pellomaska ​​Night Parade, the Tuesday dance in the square of the Medieval Castle, the evening carnival foot dance, the Thursday dance , street parties, foot mask and smart mask competitions, exhibitions and other events.

Little children will have their due on Sunday 19 February with the Children's Carnival Parade on the city's promenade, while the carnival spree culminates on Sunday, February 26, with the Great Carnival Parade on Archbishop Makariou avenue G’ with the participation of 110 floats and groups.

Limassol will say goodbye to the carnival with an outdoor dance in the square of the old port.
