The Director General of the General Directorate of the Environment of the Ministry of Agriculture, Dr. Kostas Chatzipanagiotou, characterized the particularities of the EU member states as of utmost importance in the effort to define the new climate target for 2040.
Mr. Chatzipanagiotou participated, representing the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, Dr. Maria Panagiotou, at the Ministerial Meeting on Climate and Resilience for 2050, held on Tuesday in Brussels.
According to an official announcement, the main topic that occupied the Ministerial Meeting was the climate target of the European Union for 2040, on the occasion of the relevant Communication of the European Commission (06/02/2024), with which the dialogue for agreement of the target begins for 2040. Based on the impact assessment and recommendations of the European Scientific Advisory Committee on Climate Change (ESABCC), the European Commission recommends a 90% reduction in net greenhouse gas emissions by 2040.
The legal proposal that will set the climate target for 2040 will be the responsibility of the next term of the European Commission, after the European elections and the debates and dialogue that will take place in the coming months.
In the context of the debate, the Director General made a preliminary comment on the process with an emphasis on the socio-economic aspects and the need for a structured dialogue with all the actors involved. He underlined that the EU challenge is not limited to maintaining and increasing ambition, but also to the lessons we will learn from the already accumulated experience at a technical level, as well as at a procedural level from the implementation of the existing policy.
Dr. Hatzipanagiotou characterized as of utmost importance the particularities of the member states in the effort to define the new goal for 2040 and noted that the effort should be accompanied by corresponding technical and financial support.
