The speech of the Minister of Education, Sports at the event “Dedication to the National Anniversaries of March 25, 1821 and April 1, 1955” and at the opening of the Monument of the Caraviotes
What the Government seeks is the resumption of talks, in order to achieve a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus issue through dialogue, on the basis of a fair and sustainable solution, the Minister of Education, Sports and Youth, Athina Michailidou, said on Wednesday.
In her speech at the event “Dedication to the National Anniversaries of March 25, 1821 and April 1, 1955” and at the opening of the Karaviot Monument, at the Karaviot Cultural Foundation, in Strovolos, Mrs. Michailidou said that “we must draw lessons and strength from the faith and the dedication of the Karaviotians who keep the memory of our occupied land undisturbed and pass on to the new generation the flame of the return struggle”.
As noted by the will and perseverance of the Karaviotians “strengthens peaceful efforts to reach a solution that will reunite our homeland, freeing it from anachronistic guarantee treaties, occupation troops and the invasive rights of third countries”.
He added that the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth, on the other hand, aims to cultivate in young men and women “those values ​​and skills that will make them citizens with patriotism and critical thinking, citizens who, drawing lessons from our history, they will live dynamically in the present with an eye creatively and optimistically to the future, in a reunited, free homeland”.
According to the Minister of Education, “today when the country is already counting 50 years of illegal Turkish occupation, we must learn lessons from our heroes during the two leading moments of our history”, to add that “we must learn lessons and strength from faith and the dedication of all of you, the Karaviotes, who keep alive the memory of our occupied land and pass on to the new generation the flame of the return struggle”.
Referring to the Monument of the Karaviotes he said: “The monument that stands on this temporary roof of yours and that we are inaugurating today, as a small tribute and respect to the struggle and sacrifice of the people that Karavas raised, will keep us committed to repaying the debt that we have to hand over to the new generation a free, united and prosperous country.”
“For this debt,” he continued, “we will continue to fight. We owe it to our parents and grandparents, we owe it to those who fought and sacrificed for the freedom of our country, we owe it to our children and grandchildren. This will also be the vindication of the heroes of our Nation”.
