The practice allowance for lawyers and engineers now amounts to €750, following an agreement reached at noon on Thursday between the Ministry of Labour, the Cyprus Bar Association (PDA) and ETEK, during a meeting of the heads of the three bodies at the Ministry of Labour.

In his statements after the end of the meeting, Yiannis Panagiotou, Minister of Labor and Social Insurance, expressed his satisfaction with the agreement reached after dialogue with the Pan-Cypriot Bar Association and with ETEK, according to which the amount of the exercise allowance for young scientists in the fields of law and engineering it can be increased from €650 to €750.

In addition, the Minister pointed out, “obviously each professional body can decide to what extent this minimum amount of its own contribution can be increased or maintained according to the different facts that apply in each branch”.

“In essence, what is of great importance is the recognition on both sides of the need to better support young scientists, tomorrow's colleagues, who are invited through internships in the work environment, to receive experiences that will equip them for the next steps”, concluded Mr. Panagiotou.

For his part, Christos Cleridis, President of the Cyprus Bar Association (PDA), thanked the Minister of Labor “for his efficiency in finding a satisfactory solution”, as he said. Furthermore, he spoke of “a first step”, adding that “there is also the prospect of an even better improvement in the field of lawyers in the future”.

Mr. Cleridis noted that today law firms seek to secure the services of practicing lawyers, which was not the case in the past. In addition, he expressed the hope that “in the future this minimum amount will also increase”.

Konstantinos Constantis, President of ETEK, welcomed the Minister's initiative and the conclusion, “the which must surely satisfy everyone”, as he said. “We consider it a blessing that there is even this minimal amount as an allowance for the purposes of internships and smooth integration into the work of our young people, which we consider an important area in which we want to invest,” he added.

“I hope the possibilities exist and the allowances increase so that everyone feels that they are being paid as they should be and based on what they offer”, noted the President of ETEK, adding that the the aim of the Chamber is beyond the minimum allowance to encourage its members for even greater allowances, “to ensure this right working environment for all our young people”.
