Trillion cicadas are expected to overrun the US, in numbers not seen in possibly centuries.
Americans in the southeast of the States are ready for a unique “spectacle” as two different species of cicadas will emerge, one of which emerges from underground every 13 years and the other every 17, according to a report by SkyNews.
The double appearance of periodical cicadas, notorious for how loud they are, is a rare occurrence and is estimated to have last occurred 221 years ago in 1803.
It should be noted that, it can their hum can reach a volume of up to 110 decibels.
John Cooley, who specializes in the study of cicadas at the University of Connecticut, has called the coming invasion “cicada-geddon,” from Armageddon.
Which areas will be flooded
The species that emerges every 13 years, that of Brood XIX is widespread in the Midwestern states, including Iowa, Illinois, and Indiana, as well as in the Southeast, in smaller parts of Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and Maryland, according to National Geographic.
The cicadas that emerge every 17 years, which is called “Brood XIII” will appear in Illinois.
According to researchers at the University of Connecticut, cicadas will cover so much area this year that will be equal to the size of Delaware.
