Washington says agreement on Iran's nuclear program 'on the horizon'

The United States said Monday that an agreement with Iran to bail out a deal on Iran's nuclear program “is on the horizon” on the eve of the resumption of talks in Vienna. “Despite the progress” made in January, the talks “have reached a stage where a conclusion becomes urgent,” a State Department spokesman told AFP.

“An agreement that addresses the key concerns of all parties is on the horizon, but if not reached in the coming weeks, Iran's nuclear progress will make our return impossible,” the 2015 text added. The goal is to find a compromise to salvage the deal aimed at preventing the Islamic Republic from acquiring an atomic bomb.

The United States withdrew from the agreement in 2018 under the presidency of Donald Trump, reinstating all financial sanctions against the Islamic Republic. Tehran, in turn, has been freed from many key restrictions on its nuclear activities.

Negotiations have been going on since last spring in Vienna between Iran and the other countries that are parties to the agreement (Germany, China, France, Britain and Russia), with only the indirect participation of the Americans.

“We have long argued that it would be more productive to speak directly with Iran,” he said. “However, the talks will remain indirect, at the request of Iran. “The United States has not participated in any direct meetings with Iran.”
