To the three researchers worldwide, whose research and related publications receive extensive attention and references from the scientific community

The Assistant Professor of the Cyprus University of Technology(TEPAK), b is among the three researchers worldwide, whose research and related publications receive extensive attention and references from the scientific community, in matters related to Geoinformatics applications for cultural heritage, according to the findings of a recent (global) of a bibliometric study published in the prestigious scientific journal Heritage Science, of the Springer publishing house.

A statement from TEPAK states that for the purposes of the study the scientific database Web of Science was used and after a process of retrieving and applying specific criteria, a total of 1026 scientific articles were recorded which were published in the period between 1994 and 2023.

After analyzing the cross-citations of the above articles, this research recorded their influence on over 32,000 authors and 47,000 related publications.

In addition, TEPAK reports, the results show that the relevant publications can be distinguished in four scientific fields (research directions) as follows: the first scientific field includes studies of GIS participation (public participatory GIS), while the second field includes research related to the monitoring of cultural heritage sites and archaeological sites using satellite remote sensing techniques. In this field, the works of Mr. Agapios and his collaborators are shown to be at the center of the scientific community. The other two fields of research are complemented by risk studies of monuments and sites through GIS and geological studies.

Regarding the synergies between research institutions, in terms of cross-citations (citations), the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR, Italy) note the largest (total) numbers of cross-citations, while the Cyprus University of Technology (TEPAK) and the Universidade do Minho (Portugal) comparatively presents the highest average numbers of cross-references of all institutions worldwide.

The survey of the most influential authors on geoinformatics and heritage issues concludes that their contributions span a range of different disciplines, including the social sciences, heritage management, geographic information science, spatial planning and of geology.

“The variety of research methods and technological tools, such as GIS participation studies (public participatory GIS), remote sensing and multi-criteria decision analysis, etc., show the interdisciplinary nature of this field. The different approaches between the above groups in turn enrich the dimensions of research in the field of geoinformatics and cultural heritage, providing diverse perspectives for the development of” it is added.

It is further noted that in a corresponding independent recent research published in the same journal on the rapid developments taking place in the field, and related to the fourth industrial revolution and its applications in cultural heritage studies, Mr. Agapiou's name had been included in the list of the first ten researchers worldwide whose research affects the scientific community.

This particular study, reports TEPAK, has analyzed, quantified and mapped scientific articles related to the fourth industrial revolution and how it has been implemented and influenced cultural heritage studies between the period 2016 to 2021. The data for this research has been drawn from the Scopus and Web of Science databases.
