Speaking at a press conference of the Organization of Paraplegics of Cyprus (OPAK), at the organization's building, Mr. Kousios spoke of a “very important and pioneering project” whose implementation idea was conceived by the late Minister of Labour, Zeta Emilianidou. He stated that in 2017 the late Minister, through her consultations and the requests of the various organizations to strengthen care services, recognized that beyond the social care benefits that were already being offered, there were needs of people with severe disabilities that needed to be addressed in a more substantial way .
“I am very pleased to note that the project ‘Employment and training of the unemployed to provide home care services to paraplegic and quadriplegic people’, which started gradually in January 2018, with co-financing from the European Social Fund, and is increasingly it is developing and expanding, it is very successful with practical results”, said Mr. Kousios.
He stated that through the project being implemented, 144 Cypriot caregivers were employed, after a personal interview and evaluation. The caregivers, the Minister continued, were trained, without any financial burden, both at a theoretical and practical level, with the participation of trainers from the Organization based on the special needs of its members and in cooperation with the Human Resources Development Authority that organized the programs training. He stated that upon completion of the training, carers are able to obtain the European Carer's Card, which is a recognized qualification in their field.
