Complaints were made to the Ministry of Defense by members of Accept – LGBTI Cyprus regarding a video in which a non-commissioned officer of the National Guard appears to be making homophobic comments.
In the announcement they say: «Incredible video where a non-commissioned officer of the National Guard proceeds with extreme hatred and humiliation of the LGBTI community, and goes as far as stating that if he had a gay son he would shoot him yesterday! The army officer in question has tons of homophobic videos posted on his tiktok account.
Our organization wants to make it clear that such videos are not tolerated in a European country of 2023!
Some of our members have already made complaints to the Ministry of Defense. We call on the Cyprus Police and the Ministry of Defense as well as the Commissioner of Administration to act accordingly, so that the message of zero tolerance is given for such extreme public behaviors that irreparably hurt and stigmatize the LGBTI community.
This video is a strong proof of the need that exists for more effective legislation on hate speech but also for raising awareness and educating society on LGBTI issues, through Education.
