Nobel prize-winning Greek Cypriot economist Christoforos Pissarides has advised young people not to rush into studying science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields, saying that skills that focus on creativity and empathy, may thrive in a world dominated by artificial intelligence.

The London School of Economics professor said those working in some IT jobs risk contributing to the industry's self-destruction , promoting the artificial intelligence that will eventually take their jobs in the future.

While Pissarides is optimistic about the overall impact of AI on the job market, he emphasized that despite the rapid increase in demand for STEM skills currently, jobs that require more traditional life skills, such as hospitality and health care, will continue to dominate the labor market.

“When you say that the majority of jobs will be jobs which will include personal care, communication, good social relations, people may think, 'Oh my God, is this what we have to expect in the future?'” Pissarides said. However, “we should not look down on these jobs”, he emphasized.
