Progress has been made on a number of naturalization cases being investigated by the Police and all developments will be put to a meeting at the Legal Service to be held shortly after Easter.

Recently, the Chief of Police, Stelios Papatheodorou, had requested information from the head of the Third Department at the Police Headquarters, Iakovos Ioannou, and the investigative team about the course of the investigations in relation to a series of naturalization cases of foreign businessmen and investors. The Police, as “F” wrote recently, is dusting off more than 100 cases of naturalization that emerged from the findings of the Investigative Committee under Myron Nikolatos and the former chairman of the Hellenic Capital Market Commission, Dimitra Kalogirou.

According to our information, in some cases from both findings progress has been made in the investigations and in fact they are at an advanced stage for their completion. The Chief of Police was satisfied with the work being done and asked for the investigations to be completed in order to complete the cases.

At the same time, the Attorney General, George Savvidis, requested to be informed about the course of the investigations of the naturalization cases and the crucial appointment with the investigators for next week has already been determined. Both the Legal Service and the Police have a table with all the serious cases, in which the new developments are recorded as well as the instructions that are given. The leadership of the Legal Service has established continuous updates on all serious cases investigated by the Police, in order to give the relevant instructions and to proceed quickly with the procedures.

Developments are also expected in May regarding the case concerning the revelations of the Al Jazeera network, with five people involved. The investigations have been completed and the file was forwarded to the Legal Service last March. Also, the files of three other cases related to naturalization or the Cooperation have been forwarded for instructions, while a case for naturalization of a foreigner has been registered in the Larnaca District Court.

Also, a case related to naturalization with the involvement of a law firm in Paphos is under consideration, but due to requests to the Supreme Court for telecommunications data, it is not proceeding. However, it is not ruled out that in May we will see a second case on the issue of naturalization to be registered in the Court. Police investigations cover providers involved in a naturalization, and the Pancyprian Bar Association recently fined five law firms that had seized their gold passports for failing to conduct adequate checks on their clients' money.
