The Guidelines for the Emergency Management of Adults with Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) and People with Thalassemia, which were developed for the first time at a global level by the National Thalassemia Committee (NTC), were handed over to the Medical Director of the OKYpY, Dr. Georgios Pandela, in the context event held on Saturday, January 14, at the offices of the International Thalassemia Federation (IOTH).

As the EETH states in its announcement, “these Guidelines are a necessary tool for the medical and nursing staff of the Accident and Emergency Departments (AED) of state hospitals and aim to contribute to the proper information, training and guidance of health professionals of these Departments around the most likely, acute medical complications with which people with thalassemia and DN often come to TAEPs”.

It is noted that the President of the EETH and the International Thalassemia Federation (ITF), Panos Englesos, described the drafting of the Guidelines as a work of “substantial importance and value”, pointing out the need to provide immediate and effective care to patients with hemoglobinopathies in emergency situations where possible to judge their own lives, especially, as he added, “when in the specific departments there is, not unfairly, limited special knowledge and expertise for the management of such complex and complicated chronic diseases”.

Next, it is reported that Dr. Pantelas congratulated the Commission for its work and pledged that the Organization will immediately proceed with the appropriate procedures for the adoption and implementation of the Guidelines by the doctors of the TAEP of the OKYPY.

It is noted that the development of the Guidelines is included in the main actions of the “National Strategy for Thalassemia and Other Hemoglobin Diseases”, which is one of the main terms of reference of the National Thalassemia Committee. The EETH expressed its gratitude to the doctors and scientists of the Cyprus Thalassemia Clinics, the representatives of the Pancypriot Antianemia Association (PAS) and the Pancypriot Association of Sickle Cell and Microsickle Anemia (PA.SY.DRE.MIA), as well as to the experts of international prestige abroad for their valuable contribution to the drafting of the Guidelines. On behalf of EETH, Mr. Englesos thanked the representatives of OKYpY and TAEP for their presence at the event and their expressed interest in this project.
