The clear message that the two-state solution in Cyprus cannot be accepted by the European Union, as it is not in line with the decisions of the Security Council, nor with the efforts and agreements of decades, was sent by the Director General of the Union Structural Reform Support, Mario Nava.
In an interview with the Yeni Duzen newspaper, the EU official reiterated that the European Union remains committed to a solution within the framework of United Nations resolutions, European principles and values, as well as the acquis communautaire.
EU official's statement on Cyprus “unfortunate”, says “Foreign Ministry”
The “foreign ministry” characterizes the “foreign ministry” views of the European Commission's Director General for Support of Structural Reforms, Mario Nava, published in the Turkish Cypriot press. According to a new written statement from the “foreign ministry”, these statements do not surprise the Turkish Cypriot side as “once again [it turns out that] EU officials are still not able to understand the reality on the island.”
According to the “foreign ministry”, the EU provides unconditional support to the Greek Cypriot side and “the interpretation and judgment of EU officials on the settlement of the Cyprus issue has no moral or legal basis.”
The statement also said that “the [chapter of] the bi-communal, bi-zonal federal model, which has been negotiated for more than 50 years, has closed in Crans Montana. “At the informal UN + 5 meeting in Geneva, the Turkish Cypriot side announced that an agreement can be reached in Cyprus based on the sovereign equality and equal international status of the two states, the existing reality and the cooperation of the two sides on the island.”
Finally, referring to the determination of the Turkish Cypriot side to continue promoting the above proposal, the “Foreign Ministry” calls on “European Union officials, who continue to ignore the sovereign equal status of the Turkish Cypriot people, to approach the Turkish Cypriots fairly.” and to realize the existing reality on the island, setting aside the model of the federation, which is a remnant of history “.
