Student resentment and bitterness - We became guinea pigs in a dictatorial regime

Photo

With a letter full of anger, indignation and bitterness, students of the C11 department of the Acropolis Lyceum, address themselves to the authorities, putting them before their responsibilities “for the downfall of the educational system with the four-month exams”.

The letter raises, among other things, issues such as:

  • Absence of scientific, objective or other evaluation of any reform in education
  • From the 20-minute warning assessment exercise, the ending is a 45-minute quiz and change of subject
  • Excessive volume of matter
  • Psychological factor: Students have been transformed into guinea pigs
  • Another year, it has led to a spiritual and emotional wreck.

Full letter:

“Letter of indignation and bitterness to those responsible for the downfall of the education system with the four-month exams

As students of the 3rd Lyceum, full of indignation, we strongly feel the need to express our thoughts and concerns, regarding the exams that were held for the fourth month of this year, but also the permanent problems that are perpetuated and inflated in our teacher. system. What makes us even more indignant is whether the education authorities have ever been self-critical about the current situation or whether they have objectively and scientifically evaluated any reform.

First of all, for the past three years, the highest goal of the Ministry of the Interior is the successful realization of the institution of four months. The relevant decision has been passed as a law by the Parliament, whose members are not related to the education sector. As a result, these “competent” people decide on the future of the students in a period extremely critical for them. All these reforms that are planned and carried out on a trial basis in our generation, lack the necessary coherence and organization (we can remind here that from the 20-minute warning exercises, which told us that we will be evaluated, we ended up with a 45-minute competition, in the middle of the 1st four months, as well as in the change of content). In your opinion, all this upset and disorganization, of not knowing how one will be evaluated in what will be evaluated, is necessary for the psychology of the students of DG Lyceum?

Given, of course, the above failure, it is impossible not to mention the excessive volume of matter. We are called to be examined in a vast subject matter, which must be covered in a limited time, which in fact would take nine months to be taught and assimilated by the students. In the context of endless material, continuous and demanding competitions, endless hours in tutoring, to practice in additional exercises and personal study at home, all of us hard-working students are in a constant struggle to cover the material, so we do not have time to enjoy even the smallest joys of life.

And one would expect after so much stubbornness that the exams would take place and that the writing would correspond to the skills of the students of DG Lyceum and would keep pace with the set time. The ambiguity in the wording of the questions, the huge writings and the unexpected answers of the correction guide (which in some lessons, even the teachers and the guides did not agree to return revised), justly angered the students and teachers. Once again we were surprised and this was evident from the tragic results. But otherwise guilty teachers and students…

And now, we are in the final stretch for the preparation of the most important exams for us, the Pancyprians. Throughout the year, decisions were made for their implementation, which force us to focus only on the four-month exams. In our effort to write in them, we neglect to participate in actions and competitions, which promote cooperation and creativity. Do you not consider it absurd that a student should be forced to focus only on the exams and courses in his field, in order to secure a decent degree for the baccalaureate, abandoning and indifferent to the social and spiritual events of his time?

During the last three years that the institution of four months has been implemented (in parallel with the wave of the pandemic), the psychological factor has not been taken into account at all. The students have been transformed into guinea pigs, into a dictatorial regime, in which those in charge act and act at will. Another year, it has led to a spiritual and emotional wreck.

Congratulations, then, to all who decide so responsibly for us, without us!

The students of C11,
