The Desti Smart Interreg conference started today and ends tomorrow at the Annabelle Hotel in Paphos. The Deputy Minister of Tourism, Savvas Perdios, also spoke online at the conference, while Paphos Deputy Mayor Christos Makariou and Paphos ETAP President Kyriakos Drousiotis addressed greetings, among others.

In his greeting, Mr. Perdios stressed that Cyprus is already a country fully harmonized with the process of transition to new smart tourism practices. We have already started a few years ago, he stressed, the national strategy for tourism, with a horizon of 2030.

Manos Vougioukas, Coordinator of the European program Desti Smart Interreg Europe, stated in his statements that the Paphos conference is the culmination of four years of work with 10 partners, one of which is the Cypriot city.

“The Desti Smart Interreg Europe project aims to improve transport and tourism policies in destinations by integrating strategies for sustainable mobility, accessibility and responsible travel into sustainable tourism development through efficiency, sustainability, intermodality, new transport systems and of hiking for visitors “, said. Paphos.

“The goal and purpose of all Paphos partners is the destination to become even smarter”, he observed. “Through this program we have managed to receive good practices and with EU funding to implement a specific pilot action plan which can be used mainly by visitors.

The DESTI-SMART project with Smart Destinations contributes to the EU's commitment to building an environmentally sustainable low-carbon economy with smart technologies.

The project facilitates the adoption of Information and Communication Technology solutions for sustainable mobility and accessibility to tourist destinations, thus making tourism in European regions more efficient in various ways. “Sustainable and responsible tourism can greatly benefit from digital applications at all stages of visitor information, travel guidance, intermodality and seamless travel solutions.”

ETAP President Kyriakos Drousiotis said that it is very promising for tourism and destinations that such a conference provides a forum to bring together a wide range of stakeholders and experts from so many countries around the world dealing with one of the most important issues. : Sustainable tourism mobility to smart destinations.

Mr. Drousiotis also stated that in the framework of this action, the cycling facilities for visitors, the development of new roads, cycling tourism as a low carbon activity, as well as mobility as a service for tourists have been evaluated and strengthened.

On behalf of the Municipality of Paphos, the Deputy Mayor, Christos Makariou, stated that the strategic plan of the Municipality of Paphos is to become a smart and digital city and at the same time to create a new pillar in the local economy based on innovation and university education focusing on attracting talent from the Middle East and North Africa.

“We focus on three key areas: smart and digital city, education and innovation,” said Mr. Makariou. “In order to achieve this goal, the Municipality of Paphos has already proceeded with the implementation of nine key projects and actions that will then form the basis for other combined complementary projects.
