A proposal has been submitted to invite experts from countries such as Ireland, who have experience in women's participation in the peace process, so that we can hear the ways they have used to achieve their goal and this process is on hold, the Greek Cypriot said today Co-Chair of the Technical Bi-Community Committee for Gender Equality, Soula Zavou, in her speech at an event she organized at the EU House in Cyprusthe women's movement POGO entitled “Peace concerns us. The role of women in the peace process and conflict resolution.

Referring to the action plan drawn up as part of the work of the Commission for the full, equal and substantial participation of women in the peace talks, and which was presented last April at a UN event in Cyprus, in the presence of the President of the Republic, Nikos Anastasiadis and Turkish leader Ersin Tatar, Ms. Zavou pointed out that although this was welcomed, it did not get the due attention and presentation to the general public.

“Despite all our disappointment, we wanted to move forward, with the aim of informing civil society and of women's organizations”, he said. He added that during the meetings of the two co-presidents of the Commission with UN officials, among other things, the proposal to invite experts from countries such as Ireland, who have experience in women's participation in the peace process, so we can hear the ways, the mechanisms used to achieve their goal. “ This process is on hold,” said Ms. Zavou.

He underlined that “we believe that in order to achieve sustainable peace we need the participation of civil society, organizations that promote women's rights and human rights defenders”.
