The European Union is taking a stand against Turkish moves for a two-state solution in Cyprus. The model of confederation sought by Ankara and Ersin Tatar is not accepted by Brussels, as recorded in the relevant correspondence of European officials to President Anastasiadis and the Minister of Foreign Affairs.
In a recent letter to President Anastasiadis, Charles Michel, President of the European Council, said that the EU does not accept a solution that is in line with UN Security Council resolutions and the principles on which the European Union is based. A similar letter was preceded by a letter from the EU High Representative, Josep Borrell, to Foreign Minister Nikos Christodoulidis.

The positions of the European Union at the moment are not unrelated to the efforts of the Turkish side to promote a two-state solution, ie a confederation. The European Union is trying to clarify its position regarding the form of the solution to the Cyprus problem and, above all, that it does not accept what the Turkish side is seeking. That is, a confederation solution that will essentially be two states within the Union.
In his letter dated January 20, 2021, Charles Michel responded to a previous letter from President Anastasiadis dated November 9, 2020, in which he referred to Turkey's challenges with the issue of Famagusta. Responding, the President of the European Council notes that he shares the same concerns with the PTA about the developments regarding Varosia.
Charles Michel notes that “the EU and its Member States stand by Cyprus and have expressed their unwavering solidarity and support” and added: “Only recently, the European Council of 10 and 11 December 2020 condemned Turkey's unilateral actions in Varos and called for full compliance with United Nations Security Council Resolutions 550 (1984) and 789 (1992) “.
The President of the European Council goes on to say: “The EU 's position on the Varosha regime remains firm and clear. The EU continues to act in accordance with Security Council Resolutions 55 and 789. The Security Council has repeatedly stressed the importance of the Varosha regime, reiterating that actions that are not in line with the relevant resolutions should be avoided. We are raising these positions towards Ankara as well. “Like the United Nations, the European Union holds the Turkish government responsible for the status quo in Varos.”
The letter of Charles Michel has been sent in a period of fermentation and with the informal preparatory conference at the gates the European official took care to send messages also in relation to the basis of the solution of the Cyprus problem:
“I take this opportunity to reaffirm the EU's commitment to a speedy resumption of negotiations under the auspices of the United Nations, for a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus problem, in accordance with the relevant UN Security Council resolutions and in accordance with the principles on which it is based. the EU. We expect something similar from Turkey. “The EU is ready to play an active role in supporting the negotiations.”
Concluding, Charles Michel states the following to Nikos Anastasiadis: “A stable and secure environment in the Eastern Mediterranean and the development of cooperation and mutually beneficial relations between all partners in the region, bilaterally and multilaterally, is in the strategic interest of the EU.”
