Cyprus / Covid19: One death and 268 new cases from 16,231 tests - At 1.65% the positivity rate

The Ministry of Health announces that today, December 25, 2021 :

  • 1 person died of COVID-19, bringing the total number of deaths to 628.
  • 157 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized, of which 63 are in serious condition. 75.65% of patients do not have a history of vaccination.
  • 13 post-COVID patients who have ceased to be infectious (declassified cases), continue to be hospitalized in a severe condition due to COVID in an Intensive Care Unit.
  • A total of 16,231 disease detection tests have been performed by the molecular method (PCR) and the antigen rapid test method.
  • 268 (positivity rate: 1.65% new cases of COVID-19 disease were detected by molecular tests (PCR) and antigen rapid test (antigen rapid test), bringing the total number of cases to 149,848.

The current results are detailed. 

A. Deaths from COVID-19 disease:

The 1 person who died with the ultimate cause of death being attributed to COVID-19 disease, concerns:

– A 76-year-old man who died on December 25 at the Nicosia General Hospital.

Therefore, the total number of deaths with a final cause of COVID-19 is 628, of which:

  • 401 men (63.9%), and
  • 227 women (36.1%).

The average age of those who die from the disease is 75.9 years.

B. Patients:

In total, 157 patients with COVID-19 are treated in OKYPY hospitals, of which 63 are in serious condition or in MAF conditions.

Of the 63 patients who are in serious condition, 24 are intubated, 4 are hospitalized in an intravenous intensive care unit and 35 in an intensive care unit.

C. Positive cases COVID -19 (PCR test and rapid antigen test):

Of the 16,231 diagnoses made, 7,073 were made by the molecular method (PCR) and 9,158 by the antigen rapid test method, 268 cases of COVID-19 were identified, which resulted as follows:

  • 53 cases from 5,017 samples taken as part of a passenger check at Larnaca and Paphos Airports.
  • 82 cases from 1,897 samples taken through private initiative.
  • 7 cases from 159 samples taken from the Microbiological Laboratories of the General Hospitals.
  • 126 cases from 9,158 samples tested by the antigen rapid test method in private clinical laboratories and pharmacies.

Today, no rapid antigen tests were performed through the program of the Ministry of Health.
