Ertugruloglou pessimistic about Holgin – “We have no expectations, he does not know the Cypriot”

“We have no expectations from the personal envoy of the UN Secretary-General Maria Angela Holguín Quellar,” said the “ypex” of the occupied Tahsin Ertugruloglu, adding that “in any case she does not know the Cyprus issue”.

In his statements to Turkish media, Tahsin Ertugruloglu said that during his visit to Turkey he had contacts with Vice President Çevdez Yılmaz, Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan and Minister of National Defense Yasar Güler focusing on the Olkgin contacts on the Cyprus issue.

Commenting on the search for an answer to the question of whether it is possible to continue the negotiation process that collapsed in Crans Montana in 2017, Erdoğruloglu said that “the aim of this search is to wear down the right attitude of the Turkish side, to shake our confidence. We can distinguish this game,” he said.

“As long as the Greek Cypriot side is treated as a state by the UN, there can be no common ground and no positive results can emerge from the negotiation process. Everyone is talking about solving the Cyprus problem. Fine, let's solve it, but first let's find out what the Cyprus problem is. It is not possible to solve a problem that has been wrongly diagnosed. After a misdiagnosis, nothing you suggest will solve this problem,” he said.

Tahsin Ertugruloglu argued that Mrs. Holgin does not know the Cyprus issue and added: “We have no expectations from her. It's not even possible. In any case, he doesn't know about the Cypriot issue and I hope he manages to find out what this issue is through the contacts he will make over the course of 6 months. However, if she enters the sphere of influence of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council and expresses an approach that does not correspond to the facts on the island, this will undermine her credibility.”

Stating that the EU is part of the Cyprus problem and that it is aware of its mistake, he said: “However, the EU does not have the momentum to correct it. The decision-making mechanism in the EU requires unanimity. In case a member refuses, no decision can be taken. For the EU to correct this mistake, the Greeks and Greek Cypriots must vote. Such a possibility does not exist”.

He stated that “the fact that we live on the same island and that we were partners in the past does not mean that we are obliged to have a partnership with the Greek Cypriots, as if it were God's command”.

“There was a real co-operative Democracy, guaranteed by our 'motherland'. But there was also the Greek partner who could not digest this cooperation, who did not accept it even if he pretended. He waited for the right moment and then decided to act to spoil this partnership, and they succeeded. But they rewarded him, and to this day they punish us, the side that was expelled from the cooperation, that suffered injustice”, he argued.

Tahsin Ertugruloglu said that the states that signed “ the inclusion of the 'tdvk' as an observer member in the Organization of Turkish States did not then do what they should have done” and stated that they continue to work on this matter.

Noting that the Greek Cypriot side, as he called the Republic of Cyprus, has begun to open embassies in member countries of the Organization of Turkish States, Tahsin Ertugruloglou said that “the EU makes the most of its relations with these countries”.

He also mentioned that very good decisions were made 'on paper' at the Organization of Islamic Cooperation meetings but were never implemented.

Calling attention to the fact that the Eastern Mediterranean is one of the most sensitive parts of the world and the powers have interests in it, Tahsin Ertugruloglu wondered: “If we don't see our rights and justice in the Eastern Mediterranean as an affair of the Turkish nation what will happen?” Shall we just watch with sympathy their efforts to nurture their own national interests?''

“The Eastern Mediterranean is an affair of the Turkish nation,” he added.

Tahsin Ertugruglu reported regarding the UN peacekeeping force in Cyprus that “there must be an agreement between us and the UN. If they are to serve in our ‘lands,’ it must be made clear that they have our approval. We are trying to explain that it is not acceptable for them to come and serve in the 'tdvc' based on an agreement with the so-called Republic of Cyprus. Our initiatives in this direction continue”, he said.
