With the testimony of the forensic psychologist Dr Vivek Furtado as a witness for the defense of the accused in the case of the murder of his wife in Tremithousa, the trial continued before the Permanent Criminal Court, which sits in Paphos.

The forensic psychologist testified that the 74-year-old suffered from dissociation disorder and was unable to fully think about what answers he gave to the investigating authorities after the alleged crime. As he stated, he has specialized knowledge regarding  mental management skills when someone is accused of serious crimes.

According to Dr Furtado, he examined the accused on 18.7.22.

< p>He testified that in the days before the incident, the 74-year-old allegedly met the criteria for episodic depression and that during the essential time he was suffering from dissociation disorder. As he explained to the Court, this particular disorder is a clinical symptom in people who have been under great stress. The mind he said is trying to protect itself and there is a gap between the mind and the environment. Under such circumstances he said it is not uncommon for a person to act without consciousness, awareness and proper memory. Dr. Furtado testified that from the interview he conducted with the 74-year-old, he found that the defendant was almost impossible from the clinical picture he presented to describe the events.

Besides, he added, the accused is elderly and his cognitive function was not as good as it is in a person of 20-30 years. He continued that the questions submitted to the 74-year-old were late in the evening and he estimated that for these people it is not the appropriate time for specific questions. The Court was shown a relevant video without specifying the time and day it was taken, which, as reported in the Court, shows the accused with the characteristics of dissociation disorder as it is in the findings of a relevant report prepared by the forensic psychologist.

For his part, the Representative of the Indicting Authority, Attorney of the Republic Andreas Hatzikyrou, requested a postponement for the cross-examination. The president of the Criminal Court stated that the judicial process is being carried out normally with the testimony of witnesses these days, while subsequently rejecting the request of the Prosecuting Authority for a postponement.

In his cross-examination, the Representative of the KA asked the witness, with him answering that the accused told the truth, however his credibility will be judged by the Court. So Mr. Hatzikyrou said if the testimony of the 74-year-old is not reliable, then there is no basis for his conclusions as a forensic psychologist in the relevant report he prepared. Dr. Furtado  stated that he provided the Court after relevant preparation with a report based on all the evidence he had in his possession. the defendant's condition before the incident was supported by what the 74-year-old himself told him.

Mr. Hatzikyrou submitted the position that  if the 74-year-old at the time of the incident had the ability to perceive the surrounding area in which they were, who was talking to him, he could also perceive what the police were saying to him.

< p>Subsequently, Mr. Hatzikyrou also referred to the reports of the 74-year-old to the psychiatrist of the General Hospital of Paphos

The 74-year-old allegedly mentioned to the psychiatrist of the General Hospital of Paphos that he loved his wife and that he did not want to see her suffers.

The Court fixed the case for 10.2.23 at 09:30 and ordered that the 74-year-old accused remain in custody.
