The government is preparing a list of foods where reduced or zero VAT will be imposed, according to the newspaper “Phileleleftheros”.
According to the newspaper's information, the Commission has notified member states of the Union that they have the freedom to proceed with reductions in VAT on 10 to 15 essential items, so as to relieve households somewhat. The reduction of VAT on some consumer products is allowed by the European Directive. In fact, some countries have already moved forward with reductions in VAT on a range of food and other products.
The publication states that the Finance and Trade ministries are coordinating to prepare bills to reduce VAT from 19% to 5% for products primary demand, such as detergents, fabric softeners, toilet paper, baby diapers, cleaning supplies, etc. and for zero VAT on bread, milk, baby food and other basic products.
Final decisions are expected in the coming days, while according to the newspaper there is a preliminary positive attitude from the European Union for relief for households through reduced VAT.
