The consecration of the waters took place at the dock of the Larnaca marina. It was preceded by the service of the Epiphany, which was held in the morning at the Holy Church of Agios Lazaros in Larnaca, held by Metropolitan Kitios Nektarios. The function was attended by, among others, the Commissioner of the Presidency, the candidate for the Presidency of the Republic Achilleas Dimitriadis, the Mayor, MPs and the state, military and police authorities of the city.
After the liturgy, a procession started with the escort of the National Guard, towards the marina dock, where the Cross was immersed in the sea with the simultaneous release of white doves.
Approximately 40 people, men and women, dived into the sea. , to retrieve the Cross, while with the sound of “Baptized in Jordan, Lord” the sirens of the ships that were in the marina sounded.
In statements after the ceremony, Mr. Fotiou said that “today's day is great for Christianity and Hellenism. It is a celebration of hope and optimism and everyone's wish is that better days will dawn for our Cyprus, Hellenism, the struggling Cypriot people”.
