The President of the Republic of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulidis was honored by the University of Piraeus today, Thursday, for his overall contribution to Hellenism and in particular to Cyprus, as he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of the International and European Studies department of the Faculty of Economics of Business and International Studies of Pa.Pi.
“In his person we honor the Republic of Cyprus, Cypriot Hellenism, the manly struggle he gave and will give, the expectations and hopes his presence creates for Cyprus, Greece, for Peace and security in the Eastern Mediterranean” ?, emphasized the rector of the University of Piraeus, Michalis Sfakianakis, during his greeting.
For his part, the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulidis, referred to the ties of Pa. Pei. with Cyprus and emphasized that he considers it “absolutely necessary for leaders to invest in the role of the academic community”.
He noted that "we are going through a special period at the international level: We are facing many and different challenges, economic crisis, food crisis, wars, civil strife, terrorism, effects of climate change, refugee and migration flows. These challenges cross borders and know no nationalities and state entities. They require reliable states, capable actors, flexibility, strong alliances and synergies”, he stressed.
In this context, noted Mr. Christodoulidis, Cyprus within the international system is transitioning from introversion to extroversion, through three pillars of foreign policy, always keeping the solution of the Cyprus issue as the first priority: strengthening cooperation with countries in the immediate vicinity in areas such as security and energy, the more active participation in the affairs of the European Union with initiatives that will bring added value and upgrade the prestige of the country and the strengthening of relations with the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council.
< p> "Our effort is to transition from a single-thematic foreign policy to a diverse, multi-thematic policy, more outward-looking and modern, which will utilize the special characteristics and added value of Cyprus, with the aim, among other things, to strengthen the its geostrategic role, promoting a vision for the region, which will also serve the European Union itself”, he pointed out.
The appointment of Mr. Christodoulidis as Honorary Professor was a unanimous decision of the Senate, guided by order others and his contribution to university education. The naming ceremony took place at the Municipal Theater of Piraeus, in the presence of representatives of the political and state leadership.
