We will soon be able to announce that the fire that broke out in the areas of Limassol and Larnaca provinces is under full control, said the Minister 107.6 & 97.6 and the “Morning Inspection” the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, Costas Kadis. There are resurgences, said Mr. Kadis, which, however, are manageable and are fought in their infancy. It was an unprecedented situation that we did not experience again, the fire developed with great intensity in places that were difficult to approach by the fire brigade, the Minister noted. He rejected allegations that there was a delay or misjudgment on the part of the services. He defended the actions taken by the services, but noted that there were special conditions in the area that made the extinguishing work very difficult. From the beginning, a correct assessment was made, there was an immediate mobilization and all the mechanisms were activated.
He acknowledged, however, that there had been a delay in developing the EU's civil protection mechanism to manage the effects of the RescEU climate change, which Mr Kadis explained would be brought before the European Commission by the Republic of Cyprus.
Regarding the aircraft of the Department of Forests, which has been stuck for a long time, the Minister of Agriculture stated that the aircraft does not have any mechanical or other technical problems. The fact that he is stuck, he explained, has to do with the training of pilots which is a long-standing problem.
Regarding the compensations, he noted that the goal is to take immediate actions to support the victims.
