The implementation of the reform of Local Self-Government is being accelerated in cooperation with Greece, following the visit of a Greek expert to Cyprus, says a statement from the Ministry of the Interior.
According to the announcement, the three-day visit to Cyprus by Ioannis Karagiannis, Director General of the Central Union of Municipalities of Greece (KEDE) and expert coordinator for the provision of expertise to the Republic of Cyprus, on issues of Local Government reform, "signals the intensification of the efforts of the Ministry of the Interior for the acceleration of the implementation procedures of the provisions of the new legislation, concerning the reform of the Local Self-Government”.
It is added that the visit, which began on October 31, 2022 and was accompanied by a series of contacts and meetings with all the bodies involved in Local Government, falls within the framework of cooperation between Cyprus and Greece, based on the Memorandum of Cooperation, signed between the Ministers of the Interior Cyprus and Greece, for the exchange of experience and know-how regarding the implementation of the reform.
The Greek expert, in addition to his meeting on Wednesday with the Minister of the Interior, Nikos Nouris, with whom they discussed issues policy, had a meeting with the Director General of the Ministry of the Interior, Dr. Kostas A. Konstantinou, the Head of the Directorate of Local Self-Government, Prefecture of Kyrenia, Antonis Oikonomides and officials of the Ministry of the Interior. The meeting defined the next steps and the technical details of the cooperation with the Greek Government.
Mr. Karagiannis had, among other things, successive contacts with the Presidents and members of the Associations of Municipalities and Communities of Cyprus, while he sat down and at a Session of the Central Advisory Committee, the announcement concludes.
