For the last moments of the Primate of the Church of Cyprus, Archbishop Chrysostomos, who breathed his last on Monday morning, his personal doctor Dr. Joseph Cassios.

“I asked him if he wanted anything, he said no. I asked him if it hurts, he says no. Do you want to tell me something, Your Grace? No, doctor, thank you and smile”, these were the last words of Archbishop Chrysostomos.

In his statements on Alpha's morning show, Dr. Kassios said that in the last month he had faced it very courageously and with strength of soul he had never wavered. He was very aware of what was going to happen, but he faced everything with strength of soul and a smile.

The goal of the medical staff was to ensure that he would leave with dignity, and as Dr. Kassios said throughout his ordeal, he had only experienced pain for one day, as after the medication he was given he did not feel pain again. “Makariotatos was in touch throughout this ordeal, up until Sunday night, when I visited him. They had conversed with him a little, of course in monologues, but he had a full understanding of what was happening. Indeed, only one day he had experienced pain and there we had asked, how we will deal with the whole situation, he was given some medication and from that day he had no pain, until the day he ended. In fact, he had mentioned that “yes, a miracle happened, I am not in pain”. Every time we asked him if he was in pain, he would say “no, I'm not in pain”.

At the same time, Dr. Kasios stated that “the whole process was evolutionary, because it was expected that Macariotatos would end up. On Sunday night the situation had worsened and it was predicted that we would not be able to go out in the evening or on Monday. Around 2:30 Monday morning, the situation worsened. At 5:30 when I had arrived at the Archdiocese, the situation was irreversible and unfortunately at 06:40 Makariotatos fell asleep. My aim was always that he should leave with dignity and with religious  grandeur and these goals had been achieved. He left very dignified and in the last hours before he fell asleep, he really had an overwhelming service from the Priests of the Archdiocese. We really experienced something unprecedented and I confess something very moving.”
