Cyprus is already witnessing the effects of climate change, the Minister of Agriculture, Kostas Kadis, said on Monday in his greeting, broadcast by the GTP, which he addressed at the CYMEPA relay event &laquo ;Running out of time», about climate change.

Initially, Mr. Kadis welcomed to Cyprus the participants in the “Running out of time'' action, which aims to raise public awareness of the effects of climate change. "This is a gigantic non-stop relay, which started on 30 September 2022 from Glasgow, the host city of the United Nations Climate Change Conference COP26 in 2021, and will finish on 6 November 2022 in Sharm El Sheikh, the city that will host this year's COP27 Conference”, he pointed out.

The Minister of Agriculture noted that "the participants in the event, with the message they convey, urge the leaders to intervene drastically so that  to provide young people with the necessary supplies, education and means, so that they can become protagonists in the effort for a sustainable planet”.

“Tackling climate change is a fight we can still win if we act quickly and consistently to raise the level of our ambitions and accelerate action to implement the Paris Agreement on Climate Change,” said Mr. Kadis, adding that on the basis of this Agreement, the European Union and its Member States have submitted a nationally determined contribution to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030 compared to 1990, through the legislative package Fit- for-55.

"We urge our partners around the world to do the same, that is to scale up their contribution to the international effort to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions," he said.

In addition, the Minister of Agriculture noted that " Cyprus, which is already witnessing the severe negative effects of climate change, has adopted a National Adaptation Strategy and Action Plan”.

At the same time, he pointed out that Cyprus has taken urgent action to deal with climate change at the regional level. "Our initiative aims to develop a regional action plan that will consist of appropriate policies and measures to address the specific challenges of the region related to climate change,", Mr. Kadis underlined.

For for this purpose, continued the Minister of Agriculture, the President of the Republic invited the leaders of the countries of the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East to jointly address the regional issues related to climate change, through a specific policy statement regarding the regional action plan. This declaration is expected to be adopted at the Summit of the leaders of the participating countries, which will be held on the sidelines of COP27, on November 8, 2022, he added.

"Our vision is for our region to look to the future. with optimism and to use the climate challenge as an opportunity to proudly show the world what our peoples can achieve when they work together”, Mr. Kadis concluded.
